I set out around nine in the morning, while the air is still cool. A glacier-fed river, carrying grey, ice-cold water, crosses the plain of Stechelberg and brings a welcome freshness to the valley.
Little by little, sunlight reaches the valley floor. It unveils the details of the peaks, sculpts the relief, and creates the patterns of shadow and contrast that I seek in my work. The mountainsides are draped in deep forests and broad, verdant meadows.
The path then leads into the forest, where the trees conceal the wider landscape and encourage a more intimate journey. Eventually, sometimes after several hours of walking, the scenery opens up again. The mineral world takes over once more, vast and majestic, ruled by rock and towering summits.
